Carolina Reaper

Price range: $5.75 through $1,362.50

Officially the hottest pepper in the world as ranked by Guinness Records. The average Scoville unit measurement is a whopping 1.5 million and peaks at 2.2 million. Remember, a spicy habanero scores 100,000 Scovilles. The devilish looking fruits are fiery red with a unique little stinger tail. The average size is 1.5” by 2” long. This scorcher was originally a cross between Pakistani Naga x Red Habanero. Has surprisingly good flavor once you get past the heat. Use extreme caution when handling seeds and picking fruits.

Super hot peppers are tricky to grow. The seeds are difficult to germinate under home growing conditions and they need a long, hot season to produce fruit. Pay close attention to growing instructions. Even under ideal conditions, a 60% germination rate is not uncommon.

These grew surprisingly well for us in Southern Wisconsin (Zone 5), considering it’s a long-season hot pepper. We were able to pick ripe (red) peppers three times before frost. Picking the fruits went well (with gloves on), but once you open them and expose the seed – whew! You can tell just from breathing near them that they are hot hot hot! Note that these are TRUE Carolina Reapers, with the characteristic wrinkled skin and the Reaper ‘tail’. The fruits pictured were the ones grown on our farm!
